History of Brethren

"Brethren" is a New Testament word that described the closeness and warmth of Jesus' early followers. Sisters and brothers are disciples, called together to form a community of faith. Brethren strive to move beyond the institution of the church to become a caring network of family and friends.

Founded in 1708, the Church of the Brethren is one of the historic peace churches, sharing that distinction with the Quakers and Mennonites. Emphasis is on living simply and serving others.

Brethren reach worldwide to help repair the ravages of poverty, exploitation, and catastrophic events. Individual members, congregations, and the denominations are intentional about sharing God's love through acts of service.

History of Church

Our church has been a congregation in the Mid-Atlantic District since 1977, following formation a few years earlier as an offshoot of the nearby Frederick Church of the Brethren, whose pastor, Merlin Garber, envisioned an extended ministry in this rural community.

Guided by the church extension committee, led by
Web Black, Albert Cullen, Robert Firor, Harold Hubbell, and Jon Wilson, the chapel and grounds were secured in the early 1970s. In 1974, the first fellowship worship was held, and three years later the fellowship achieved congregational status.

Our church is located in the town of Walkersville, Maryland. We are committed to forming ourselves into a new community in Christ. We welcome your participation.
